IC
Name: Ryan Rhie
Age: 18

History: Ryan has never known a world where people with certain unique abilities didn't face descrimination and fear, without forced registration and a watchful eye on their every move. It was just something he thought he'd never have to worry about at sixteen, going on seventeen.
Not that he was without worries or anything. On the surface, it seemed like he had a normal. His mom stayed home, his father worked a 9-5. But it was hardly as idyllic as it seemed. His father was the nicest guy to everyone at work but had anger issues in private, his mother found him to be a disappointment, especially as her only child. He couldn't ever blame them either, being the perpetual underacheiver barely scraping by in school, always getting in trouble for skipping. He grew up feeling mostly like he was more trouble than he was worth, but he still mostly lacked the drive to try to do better.
Ryan had been mostly content to slide by in life, bidding his time until he got to move out and way from his family. All was going according to whatever meager plan he had made until his seventeenth birthday when his abilities kicked in. First, it was accidentally melting his computer while he was playing a game online that got a little too heated on both ends, then it was realizing he could turn on electronics without even touching them. It took Ryan a bit to realize that he could control things, that he could summon electricity if he focused hard enough, or maybe he'd just been in as much denial as he could afford.
Either way, he had to eventually tell his parents. For all their troubles with each other, he never thought that they would fear him or hate him so deeply as they did, nor did he think they would actually report him. He'd thought maybe he could skirt by, just keep being normal if he kept his focus on his powers.
That wasn't an option. Without much else to do, Ryan left his home with a backpack full of a few belongings and not much else. It was difficult for a while, being a teenage runaway, but eventually Ryan learned he really could control any electronics. He took cash out of ATMs here and there, made enough to get a car and a small apartment across the country. He kept a low profile for the most part, never let anyone too close.
But the appeal of a normal life had been abandoned somewhere along the way and Ryan found himself enthralled with learning about technology in ways that had never interested him before, in learning about computers, and most importantly, hacking. It all came so easy to him, like he had an entirely new understanding of it. He used it at first to get back at his parents, to make people who'd hated him at school suffer just a little bit. It was all satisfying, knowing he'd gotten his revenge, but it felt empty. He decided to try to use his abilities to do good eventually (or at least his version), to help people with abilities like his clear their names, to keep hidden a little bit longer. He started getting too ambitious though, hacking into things the general public were never meant to see, learning terrifying truths. He just never realized he'd get zeroed in on eventually.
With a hefty price on his head and a wanted criminal, all Ryan could do was run... and running is basically all he does.

Personality: Like most kids of abuse, Ryan doesn't always have the best confidence in himself or a very high amount of self-worth. He also very rarely feels safe with other people, especially if they get too close. That's leftover from his parents mostly, but being what he is and knowing there are many who would hate him for the sheer fact he was born with unusual abilities doesn't help matters at all. He'd been raised with prejudice against his own kind and it isn't always entirely easy to unlearn.

All the same, he covers it up easy. He learned in school that if you're already laughing at yourself, it makes it that much harder for words to sting. He's mostly a friendly guy, quick to make jokes at his own expense. But it's all mostly surface level, really. He never lets people too close because he can't afford to, and besides, he doesn't really want to talk about where he comes from in general.

He can have a spiteful streak too. After he was more settled after running, he didn't even hesitate to find a way to send his father into financial ruin or to embarrass him as thoroughly as possible. He also didn't hesitate to get revenge on the kids who did bother bullying him in school. He does try to aim it only towards people who he feels genuinely deserve it though.

He does feel sympathy for others, especially now that he's one of the outcasts of society. He can see why the registration requirement, the constant fear of having someone breathing down your neck when you're just trying to live your life is... unfair. Entirely unfair. He'd never set out to be a bad guy after all.

Because of the above mentioned abuse, Ryan tends to get nervous easily, especially if someone seems to be yelling at him or angry with him, but he tries to hide it generally. He'd rather not get confrontational, but his ability with electrokinesis does give him some peace of mind of being able to protect himself in a fight.

Please describe your character's sins and how they influence them:
Spite and revenge are some of his biggest sins. He has ruined people without a single ounce of remorse. He's also stolen data, money, and so much else that wasn't his to the point he doesn't let himself feel too guilty about it anymore.

Abilities:
Technology manipulation and electrokinesis. He can make technology respond to him easily and since he feels a connection to it, he's a quick learn when it comes to new devices and foreign technology.

Ideas:
I'd just like to see how he settles in and maybe even improves himself. It would be nice if he could meet people who could become good friends or even a family of sorts. People he could open up to. I'd also like to see him deal with some of the guilt and other feelings he tends to try to shrug off.

Sample:
Please either type up a sample of your characters arrival in Penance or link to a thread done with them. It can be a TDM sample or from another game/meme/psl, etc. as long as it's reasonably in character.
